Raising My Mother

Anyone else have kids that are critical? Anyone else have kids that remember everything that you don’t want them to remember just so they can say, “that’s not what you said!” Just me?!? Gosh! I sure hope not.

It’s ironic to me that my oldest daughter was named after my mom and she couldn’t be any different than her. They share the same dislike for Dr. Pepper and peanut butter and their athletic abilities are identical. They both share a great love for babies and are remarkable with animals. It literally gives me chills at times and I LOVE it! Annnnnnd then there are some days it drives me crazy!

While I was still in high school, my mom caught me smoking. The disappointment she showed made my stomach hurt. Since that time that was many years ago I have struggled to quit every time. My daughter has a good way of showing that disappointment, just like my mother.

However, I am trying to use it to my advantage, because I do need to quit smoking for good and stop making excuses. Creating a habit is easy, but breaking a habit is extremely hard. It takes strong self-discipline and an immediate want to overcome whatever you are trying to quit doing.

I don’t believe in medications, some may, but I do not. I hate medications, I feel they put a disruption in natural body chemistry and harm more than they help.

A few tips I have gained along the way have started helping, I hope they can help you as well:

  1. Smoking is bad for your health. PERIOD. It has been proven over and over what it causes.
  2. If you have had a relative or close friend you have seen struggle with their health due to smoking, try to remember that every time you go to light up. It’s miserable to think about, but it helps.
  3. Remind yourself how disgusting it is. How much it stinks, how it makes you cough, makes your hair smell, makes your fingers and skin smell, and how it makes your clothes smell.
  4. It helps to exercise, to sweat especially. Work out at least 20 minutes a day to create a sweat at least. Sweating helps expel all the toxins in your body.
  5. Drink lots and lots of water, drinking water helps flush your system out.
  6. Find a hobby, keep your mind busy. This is one of the reasons I started blogging. I also have three scrapbooks that I am creating for my children and doing the artwork in them myself helps keep my mind occupied too.

If I could have my mother at my side 24 hours a day it would be extremely helpful, because when I’m around her I don’t even think about it since I know how much she dislikes it. But, she lives 200 miles away and I’m almost 40 years old so that is a little complicated.

Overall, I want to be here for my children as long as I can.

Therefor, leading a healthier lifestyle is where it starts.
